Who'd a-thunk that in MTV's infancy, the band to put Texas on the video map would be. Songwriters: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor Texas Towns & Places 15 "Rio," Duran Duran ![]() And if the images of Dumas and Laredo are as opposite as the sound of "Asshole" and "Rio," well. It did beat out "Texarkana," "Asshole From El Paso," and "Rio," however. "No!" was the resounding reply, mostly from youthful critics, with one veteran saying, "It's not in Texas." Yet three people nominated the song, doubtless reflecting Dave Marsh's sentiment: "Texas is stolen Mexican territory anyhow!"Īnd what of "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy (From Dumas)," the bouncy swing ditty by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys that inspired this survey? It didn't place in the Top 10, but it was the 12th favorite song on the list, just behind the 11th, "Streets of Laredo" by Marty Robbins. "Does 'Nuevo Laredo' count?" asked Joe Nick Patoski of the Doug Sahm favorite. There's no doubt that what critics do best is argue. No one younger than 35 voted for the Johnny Mercer-Harry Warren chestnut "I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)." All ages voted for the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove." "Get a fucking life," he squawked, but when Simon LeBon sings "dance across the Rio Grande," he's name-checking the Lone Star State. No one older than 35 voted for Duran Duran's "Rio," and the flak from one voter made ears scorch. And that was one of the few rules: The title had to say "Texas." Rules, of course, were made to be broken, so there's one notable exception.Īge reflected strongly in choices, too. ![]() Non-Texas based critics admitted being daunted by the "overwhelming selection" of songs suggested the honed-down list of 500 or so titles considered was a drop in the bucket to the estimated 3,500 songs that mention the state, a city, or place in its title. Jody Denberg, for one, almost begged off, saying, "As a New Yorker I feel so unqualified to participate," yet his sensibility in programming KGSR belies his origins. name a genre, and someone is singing about Texas in it.īesides the majority of the Chronicle Music staff, voters included a number of esteemed musicos not even based in Texas. Murder ballads, disco tunes, school anthems, television show themes, post punk, classic country, hot jazz, smokin' blues, New Wave. Songs about the state of Texas generally celebrate its spirit and geography - and love. Songs about Texas towns and places usually involve love - unrequited, young, old, lost, newfound, enduring. Texas - like New York, California, and the whole South - just seems to inspire music.Īnd here's something that became obvious in listening to hundreds and hundreds of songs. ![]() This Ding Dong moment happened in the wake of the Chronicle's Texas Top 40 last November, an effort that was so much fun to be part of that it didn't take long to marry the two in concept. Besides making me crazy, it got me thinking about the phenomenon of a state that inspires so many songs. "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy (From Dumas)" got stuck in my head last April.

If you feel any give, then you have not properly crimped the connector. Apply gently pressure pulling the two pieces apart. To perform this test, simply hold onto the wire in one hand and the butt splice in the other. Now you should perform a gentle tug test to ensure that the wire does not pull free. Now that your wires are properly stripped to the correct length and one side has been inserted, you will want to crimp that side of the butt splice with the proper tool. The insulation should butt up to the outside of the barrel body. Next, you will want to strip your wires so that the bare conductors touch the indentation you will see inside of the butt splice barrel. The first step is to select the correct size wire connectors and style for the task at hand. Stress Relief How do you use a butt splice?īutt splices are used by crimping them to create a long-lasting durable bond. One question we often get from our customers is how to use them. ![]() As you can see, the advantages of these connectors are numerous which explains why they are such a common type of connector. If we are talking about an epoxy lined heat shrink butt splice, then you can add protection from moisture, chemicals, and stress to that list. These electrical connector types are built for longevity They are inherently durable which means that they can protect the connection point from impact and abrasion. How is a butt splice advantageous?īutt splices are advantageous as they allow you to connect two or more wires in a way that offers various protections to the connection point. Now let us take a look at what makes these types of connectors advantageous. ![]() How do you know if your existing butt splices need to be replaced? Are your butt splices faded? Are your butt splices cracked? If so, then it may be time to replace those splices with new ones. Even though they are ideal for new wire and cable installations, butt splices are equally useful for replacing older parts or performing maintenance. In order to select the correct type of connector for your task, it is important to know what advantages that they offer.īutt splices are implemented in connecting multiple wires together in order to complete an electrical circuit. Pacer's large inventory of butt splices are offered in heat shrink, nylon, vinyl, and non-insulated. These types are useful in situations where the environment is not as much of a direct concern. The alternative to epoxy lined is either vinyl, nylon, or non-insulated. Epoxy lined is only available with heat shrink butt splices. To properly activate the epoxy, heat the ends of the butt splice with the proper tool after crimping. This is useful in marine conditions or other environments where hazards may be present. This glue, or epoxy, reacts to heat and expands creating an environmentally sealed connection. ![]() Why is this important? Many manufacturers do not line the interior of their butt splices with a melt-able glue. When selecting which type of butt splice to get, pay special attention as to whether they are epoxy lined or not. "Their ease of use and economical pricing makes them very common in electrical systems." Their ease of use and economical pricing makes them very common in electrical systems. We will discuss the various types of butt splices further down the page. Crimp connectors and other electrical connectors ensure quality connections. They could also be used to connect two or more smaller gauge wires to a single wire. For example, step-down butt splices are meant to connect a higher gauge wire to a lower gauge wire. Butt splices are one of many types of crimp connectors used to safely connect one or more wires to another wire. It depends on which style of butt splice you are using and the task at hand. ![]() ![]() Ian originated from a tropical wave producing a large amount of showers and thunderstorms moving off the west coast of Africa on September 14–15. ![]() Meteorological history Map plotting the storm's track and intensity, according to the Saffir–Simpson scaleĮxtratropical cyclone, remnant low, tropical disturbance, or monsoon depression Sanibel Island, Fort Myers Beach, and Pine Island bore the brunt of Ian's powerful winds and its accompanying storm surge at landfall, which leveled nearly all standing structures and collapsed the Sanibel Causeway and the Matlacha Bridge to Pine Island, entrapping those left on the islands for several days. The cities of Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples were particularly hard hit, leaving millions without power in the storm's wake and numerous inhabitants forced to take refuge on their roofs. Much of the damage was from flooding brought about by a storm surge of 10–15 ft (3.0–4.6 m). Ian caused catastrophic damage with losses estimated to be around $113 billion, making it the costliest hurricane in Florida's history, surpassing Irma of 2017, as well as the third-costliest in US history, behind only Katrina of 2005 and Harvey of 2017 respectively. Hurricane Ian caused 161 fatalities: 5 in Cuba, 150 in Florida, 5 in North Carolina, and 1 in Virginia. Ian became extratropical shortly after landfall and fully dissipated by early the next day. There it re-strengthened to become a hurricane once again before making its final landfall in South Carolina on September 30. After moving inland, Ian quickly weakened to a tropical storm before moving back offshore into the Atlantic. In doing so, Ian tied with several other storms to become the 5th-strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the contiguous U.S. It peaked as a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) early on September 28, while progressing towards the west coast of Florida, and made landfall just below peak intensity in Southwest Florida on Cayo Costa Island. Ian lost a minimal amount of strength while over land and soon re-strengthened while over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across the area resulting in a nationwide power outage. As Ian rapidly intensified into a Category 3 hurricane, it made landfall in western Cuba. On the morning of September 23, the wave had enough organization to be designated as a tropical depression, after which it strengthened into Tropical Storm Ian early the next day while it was southeast of Jamaica. The wave moved into the Caribbean Sea on September 21 bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to Trinidad and Tobago, the ABC islands, and the northern coast of South America. Ian originated from a tropical wave that moved off the coast of Western Africa and across the central tropical Atlantic towards the Windward Islands. Ian was the first Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic since Lorenzo in 2019, and the fifth since 2016 to reach that strength before making landfall in the contiguous United States. Ian was the ninth named storm, fourth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. Ian caused widespread damage across western Cuba, Florida, and the Carolinas. Hurricane Ian was a deadly and extremely destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane, which was the third-costliest weather disaster on record, the deadliest hurricane to strike the state of Florida since the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, and the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Michael in 2018. Although I am always eager to find alternatives to BMW factory products, I would stick with the factory coolant for now. The part number for a one gallon container is 88-88-6-900-316, and it costs about $13.00 per gallon. For example, Hyundai says the coolant in the engine. For others, changing it isn’t even on the maintenance schedule. This antifreeze contains no nitrites and no phosphates. For some vehicles, you’re advised to change the coolant every 30,000 miles. BMW factory antifreeze has been formulated to prevent this problem of silicate drop-out without any coolant performance loss. This is the 'green goo' (yes, it actually says that in the BMW Tech bulletin - gotta love those German translators) that results as a consequence of an antifreeze over-concentration in the coolant, combined with hard water, and the phospates commonly used in many antifreezes. I'm sure one question you're about to ask is "what type of coolant should I use?" BMW has issued a 1991 technical bulletin, 17 01 88(1743), which details problems with what is known as silicate gel precipitation in engines. I don't recommend even mixing brands, much less types.Īnd if you're changing a water pump, the system is going to be empty anyway. This can lead to corrosion in the cooling system and the early demise of things like water pumps and radiators. The additive packages are mutually incompatible. Now there are at least a half-dozen variants. And just because they're the same color doesn't mean anything. And what if I had used a brand that was red? They never would have known and then what would have happened to my engine?Ī: Never mix coolant types. Is this true? It seems to me that anti-freeze is anti-freeze. They found that the water pump is leaking (which seems "early" with so few miles on it) but they also told me that since I added "green" anti-freeze to the Chrysler "red" anti-freeze, it would require a coolant system flush and that only "their" anti-freeze can be used in Chrysler vehicles. We had it in for a LOF 16-point Winter Service Special yesterday and I asked them to pay special attention to the cooling system since we'd never needed to add any fluid in the 3 years we've owned it. I noticed that the radiator level was low two weeks ago so I added a 50/50 mix of water & Prestone (we live in Washington State & winter's coming fast). ![]() Q: We have a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan (bought new) that has 20,646 miles on it.
